Student Paper Proposals

Student Paper SessionThe Michigan Museums Association (MMA) is now accepting student paper proposals for the 2018 Annual Conference. MMA strives to support students as future museum leaders. The student paper/project session offers students the opportunity to share their research, class projects, and field experiences.

The 2018 conference will be held in Dearborn from October 28 through October 30. Student papers will be presented on Tuesday, October 30 from 1:30-2:30pm.

We invite proposals for presentations on any topic within the field of museums, although preference may be given to those that fit the conference theme, From the Ground Up: Leadership in Museums. For more information about the theme, or the conference, please visit the MMA conference website.

Each presentation will be limited to 15 minutes, and students are encouraged to consider the listener when designing the presentation. Presenters are expected to provide their own laptop and adapters in some cases. A projector and screen will be provided.

Participants in the student paper/project session must be enrolled in a museum studies, public history, historic preservation, or related program, and a reference from an instructor or advisor is required on the proposal form. Proposals will also be accepted from recent graduates who graduated within the last 6 months, but presentations should focus on papers/projects completed as a student. MMA seeks to showcase students from programs across the state—both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Students are strongly encouraged to work with their program faculty to shape a successful proposal.

Students whose proposals are accepted must attend the 2018 Annual Conference to present their paper in person, and are expected to attend the full conference. Student presenters will receive complimentary conference registration and a $100 stipend to cover travel expenses.

All proposals must be received by September 14, 2018 by 5:00 pm. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee of MMA members who will determine which papers will be accepted. A total of four submissions will be selected for the session. Students will be notified about the status of their proposal no later than September 21, 2018.
