Executive Assistant/Marketing Coordinator – Durand Union Station

The Michigan Railroad History Museum in Durand opened as a public museum in 1976 inside a former Grand Trunk Western baggage car in Iron Horse Park. By 1991, it had moved into the restored Durand Union Station, a picturesque depot built in 1905 and nicknamed “The Queen of the Rails.” It is operated by Durand Union Station, Inc. A portion of the station is available for event rentals.

Durand Union Station, Inc. seeks an Executive Assistant and Marketing Coordinator to oversee all aspects of the institution's marketing, providing creative solutions to promotion for the non-profit. The successful candidate will be responsible for using DUSI's Strategic Plan to create and implement ways to increase community awareness and audience engagement. The Coordinator will establish community relations for the Museum and monitors specific interests and issues so the Museum can participate in the development of issues affecting it.

The successful candidate will also serve as the office manager for the non-profit, coordinating events, directing inquiries to appropriate staff. The position requires working with volunteers, interns, and community service workers.

This position reports to the Executive Director and is part-time at approximately 24 hours a week, Tuesday through Friday with occasional weekends. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not excluded to the following:

  • Developing and coordinating all media relations
  • Maintaining visual identity by overseeing all design projects
  • Serve as web and e-communication content manager
  • Assist in the planning and execution of annual events and public programs
  • Help define PR and media objectives, develop strategy in cooperation with the Strategic Plan
  • Track and report on PR and media program results
  • Develop marketing program to support the promotion of exhibitions, Public Programs, special events and campaigns
  • Produce the monthly Museum e-newsletter
  • Create and maintain a database of media contacts
  • Help create, maintain and cultivate relationships with a comprehensive list of community and cultural partners, including seeking sponsorships and partnerships
  • Assist in coordinating the Museum's brand integrity and parameters
  • Coordinate space rentals, including maintaining our existing rental packages and outreach
  • Answering phones
  • Coordinating tour schedules, including scheduling docents to serve as guides
  • Assigning tasks to and supervising volunteers, interns, and community service workers
  • Other tasks as designated by the Executive Director


Candidates must have an Associate’s degree and at least 2 years experience in the marketing field, preferably in a non-profit organization. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Publisher). Familiarity with Google Docs. Exceptional written and oral communication, project management, organizational and customer/client service skills are required as are strong technical skills with content management systems, Mailchimp, WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with distractions. Ability to work both independently and as part of committees and teams to solve problems. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is a plus. Basic IT troubleshooting ability a plus.
