Museum Director -- Michigan Firehouse Museum & Education Center

The Michigan Firehouse Museum & Education Center, located near Depot Town in Ypsilanti, Michigan, is looking for a Museum Director. This part-time position will be responsible for not only the day-to-day operations of the Museum, but facilitate the growth of the Museum consistent with its vision and mission.

Brief Summary of Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for daily operation of the Museum to include: facility maintenance, finances, care of museum collections, exhibits development, programming and events, fundraising, and gift shop management.
  • Manage paid and volunteer staff, including the recruitment and training of personnel.
  • Maintain the financial records of the Museum.
  • Organize and facilitate programs and events held at the Museum.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop the Museum’s vision and mission to meet current and future needs of the community and visitors.
  • Develop fundraising strategies to increase revenue to include grant writing, sponsorship development, donor cultivation, coordination of museum fundraising events, management of the Museum’s membership program, and management of the Museum’s gift shop.
  • Responsible for changing of exhibits, displays, and artifacts.
  • Responsible for the cataloguing, storage, care, and conservation of Museum artifacts.
  • Create/write/edit and publish brochures, newsletters, calendars, flyers, posters, ads for publications and other promotional and exhibit material that coincides with the Museum’s mission and marketing strategy.
  • Responsible for the content and management of the Museum’s website and social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram.
  • Support the Museum’s interaction with its local communities to include participation in parades, fundraisers and other events (Touch-A-Truck, Safety Town, 4th of July and Heritage Festival, etc.).
  • Facilitate the development of Museum partnerships and collaboration with other non— profit organizations (Safe Kids Coalition, MotorCities National Heritage Area, GLIAFFA, etc.).
  • Must be available to work weekends and all Museum hours of operation.

Candidates should have the following skills and qualifications:

  • BS/BA in Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, History, Business or other related fields.
  • Interest in or familiarity with firefighting history or related subject matters including public safety, vintage vehicles, history, or historic preservation.
  • Experience with grant writing and comfortable with public speaking.
  • Familiar with MS Office computer software.
  • Two years working in a museum setting. Experience working with historic artifacts and conservation, as well as heritage interpretation and tourism necessary.
  • Prior experience as manager in a museum or 501(c) (3) organization.
  • Able to lift, move, and store museum collections and gift shop merchandise.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Possess good people skills and the ability to interact with individuals, groups and organizations.
