Museum Experience & Volunteer Manager -- Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum

Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director of Education and the Director of Operations, the Museum Experience and Volunteer Manager is responsible for the development and supervision of interpretive programs for the general public and Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. This position also supervises and manages the Museum volunteer program. The manager monitors the conditions and the daily operations of the public spaces and programs at the Museum to promote a positive visitor and volunteer experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Plans, develops, manages, and evaluates floor programs, including activity stations, science demonstrations and other informal learning experiences for general museum visitors, with special focus on weekend and peak season visitor events
  • Manages volunteer program of 1,000+ volunteers per year, including strategic planning,   program growth and development, volunteer training, and day-to-day operations.
  • Works with Volunteer Coordinator, Leslie Science & Nature Staff, Accessibility Programs Coordinator, and staff across all departments to create new volunteer programs, identify appropriate placement for volunteers, and to create volunteer job descriptions.
  • Supervises and supports Volunteer Coordinator in day-to-day management of the volunteer program. Supports LSNC with behind-the-scenes aspects of the volunteer program, such as database support.
  • Supervises, trains and supports volunteer floor staff and part time assistants working with visitors in exhibit spaces and public programs activities
  • Works with exhibit, education and operations staff to provide long-range planning of weekend, special, and peak season events
  • In consultation with the Director of Education, Director of Operations, Executive Director and Finance Director, develops annual expense budget for Gallery Programs
  • Serves as the Museum’s official liaison to the visiting public; provides thorough attention to the comfort of the guests and the delivery of a positive museum experience
  • Works each week Tuesday-Saturday
  • Other duties as assigned

Related duties and responsibilities:

  • Attends all general staff meetings and meetings of other departments as appropriate
  • Oversees daily operations of the Museum as the on-duty staff member

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with broad range of ages and interests
  • Must be extremely service-oriented and work well within a team environment
  • Strong organization and project management abilities; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Patience and understanding in managing potentially difficult situations
  • Ability to stay calm when dealing with emergencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or a related discipline
  • Broad knowledge of science and science education
  • Relevant computer literacy
  • Must be able to sit/stand for 4 hours, crouch/kneel on the floor, and lift 20 lbs.
