Work location is Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park and Mainland administrative office in Mackinaw City. Position will generally work 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, but will be required to work holidays, weekends (especially during the open season May through October) and evenings as park needs dictate.
This position is responsible for the natural history interpretation and recommendation of natural resource management goals, for program implementation and coordination with public interpretive groups at Mackinac State Historic Parks sites. The Park Interpreter will hire and supervise seasonal natural and historical interpretive staff at Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park and has oversight over all public programs at the site including natural history and living history.
Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park. Historic Mill Creek is situated on over 600 acres and contains more than 3 miles of trails, a segment of the North Central State Trail, Mill Creek, over a ½ mile of Lake Huron beach front, Millwrights House, Mill Dam, Water-Powered Sawmill, British Workshop, Saw Pit Demonstration Area, Restroom & Picnic Shelter, Picnic Area, Forest Friends Playground, Maple Sugar Shack, Water Power Discovery Station, Treetop Discovery Tower climbing wall, Forest Canopy Bridge, Eagle’s Flight Zip Line, David A. Armour Visitor Center, Mill Creek Service Center, Multiple Storage Buildings, 2 vault toilets, and multiple foot bridges/boardwalks. This employee will work out of Mill Creek Discovery Park during the use season and Mackinaw City in the Winter.
On a daily basis: Walking, standing, bending, lifting, kneeling, climbing, and pulling.
On a daily basis: Repetitive use of hand/power tools, operation of mowers/tractors.
On a daily basis: Chemicals for facility cleaning/sanitizing, solvents/paints for facility maintenance.
On a daily basis: Stressful situations working with the public, emergency response, and law enforcement.
On a daily basis: Outdoor conditions such as heat, cold, sun, snow, rain, insects, poison ivy & other allergens.
On a daily basis: Rotating work schedule as assigned (days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays).
